Abstract

Work engagement is an essential construct for understanding the psychosocial resources that promote the well-being and performance of professionals exposed to emotionally demanding contexts, such as military police officers. This study aimed to assess levels of work engagement and investigate its associations with sociodemographic and professional variables in military police officers. This is an observational, cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational study involving 506 police officers from the Interior Policing Command – 5th Region of São Paulo. A sociodemographic questionnaire and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-17) were applied, whose three-factor structure was confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis. The results indicated high levels of engagement in all dimensions (vigor, dedication, and absorption), especially among younger police officers with less time in service, in administrative roles, and with a better perception of quality of life. These findings suggest that engagement acts as a protective factor against the pressures and adversities of police work, strengthening the sense of purpose and institutional bond. It is concluded that work engagement can contribute to policies of appreciation and occupational health aimed at security forces, with a focus on strategies of recognition, psychological support, and promotion of well-being.
