Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present and discuss empirical evidence from the Fairwork Project in Brazil, which deals with decent work in the context of digital platforms, based on data collected for year 1 of the project (2021-2022). Created and coordinated by the Oxford Internet Institute in England, this project involves partnerships with research teams in thirty-nine countries on five continents. The action research carried out in this project is guided by five common principles of decent work that make it possible to evaluate the performance of platform companies: fair pay, working conditions, contracts, management, and representation. Its methodological path integrates interviews with workers, desk research, and structured meetings with representatives of platform companies. The empirical evidence already raised demonstrates that workers linked to these organizations in Brazil are not met with regard to the minimum requirements of decent work, reinforcing the need to address the regulatory challenges of platformized work.
