Brazilian public universities in the face of covid-19
resilience, lessons learned and vision of future

This article presents the results of exploratory and qualitative research based on a literature review,
document analysis, and semi-structured interviews. We interviewed leaders and researchers from
seven Brazilian public universities involved in initiatives related to covid-19. Our results showed the
capacity for resilience and readiness of the Brazilian scientific community. The pandemic promoted
substantial learning, with closer ties with society and the promotion and intensification of interdisciplinary
partnerships, but it is necessary to incorporate these practices into the daily routines of universities in
the post-pandemic period. Regarding the future of the Brazilian public university and academic science,
there was consensus among the interviewees on the urgency of more robust, assertive, and stable public
policies.
